Assorting is the first skill of the diamond trade. Before diamonds can be sold, they must be sorted into lots of matching size, shape, colour and clarity, and in Mumbai that work happens in the offices of trading houses in BKC and South Mumbai. A good assorter is fast, consistent and trusted with valuable parcels.
What the work involves
- Sorting polished or rough diamonds into lots under a loupe and lamp.
- Weighing parcels and recording them accurately.
- Matching stones into pairs and layouts for jewellery manufacturers.
- Preparing parcels for sale, memo or certification.
How to get hired
- Experience in a diamond office, or the patience to learn assorting as a trainee.
- Good eyesight and concentration over long sessions at the sorting table.
- Honesty and discretion, checked with references.
Assorters who build a reputation move up to senior assorter, then to grading, buying or managing a sorting team. Many of the trade's buyers and traders started at the assorting table in the same offices.
