Casting turns wax or resin patterns into metal jewellery. What the work involves
- Building wax trees and mixing investment.
- Running burnout ovens and casting machines to the right temperatures.
- Breaking out and cleaning castings, and recovering metal.
- Recording metal and alloy issued and returned for each batch.
How to get hired
- Experience in a jewellery casting room, or as a helper ready to learn.
- Knowledge of alloys, temperatures and common casting defects.
- Strict habits with safety and with metal records.
Casters move up to casting supervisor or casting room in charge, responsible for alloy control and metal recovery. Some move into production planning or production management. Casting experience is valued in every factory, because a good casting saves hours of finishing and grams of gold later in the line.
