About jewellery karigar jobs in Mumbai
Karigars are the craftsmen of the jewellery trade, making pieces by hand with skills often learnt over many years. Mumbai has one of India’s largest communities of karigars, many trained in Bengal, Gujarat or Rajasthan, working in workshops and factories that supply retailers across the country.
What the work involves
- Making gold and silver pieces by hand from wire, sheet and castings.
- Filing, soldering and assembling components to a design.
- Repairing, resizing and altering jewellery for showrooms.
- Working with designers to make one off and bridal pieces.
How to get hired
- Skill in your craft, shown by pieces you have made.
- Experience with the styles the workshop makes, such as bridal, temple or lightweight.
- Reliability with metal issue and return, which every workshop records.
Experienced karigars become master craftsmen, lead a team at a workshop, or run their own unit taking job work from wholesalers and brands. Many workshops in Zaveri Bazaar were started this way. Strong karigars are always in demand before the wedding season.
