Stone setting secures diamonds and gems into metal so they stay put for a lifetime. It is one of the most skilled jobs in a jewellery factory, and Mumbai’s diamond jewellery manufacturers, many in SEEPZ and Andheri, depend on setters who can work quickly under magnification without damaging a stone.
What the work involves
- Setting stones in prong, bezel, channel, pave and micro settings.
- Checking seats, heights and alignment before and after setting.
- Wax setting for production pieces before casting, at some units.
- Repairing loose or damaged settings returned from quality checks.
How to get hired
- Proven setting skill, shown in a practical test.
- Experience with diamonds and fine settings under a microscope.
- Care with stones and records, since every stone issued must be accounted for.
Setters move up to senior setter or setting department supervisor. Micro setters in particular are in demand at export houses, and some work independently on job work for several manufacturers. Good setters are rarely short of offers in Mumbai.
