Bench QC is the last pair of eyes on a piece before it leaves a department. In Mumbai factories and workshops, checkers inspect jewellery one piece at a time, catching loose stones, rough finishing and wrong weights so they are fixed in the factory rather than found by a customer.
What the work involves
- Inspecting finished pieces under a loupe for stones, finish and defects.
- Weighing pieces and checking them against job cards.
- Sending faulty pieces back for rework and recording why.
- Checking stamping and hallmark marks before dispatch.
How to get hired
- Experience at the bench or in checking, or a sharp eye and willingness to learn.
- Patience with repetitive close work.
- Honest records, since every rejection is tracked.
Checkers move up to senior checker and then to quality executive or quality supervisor for a department. A gemology or quality course speeds the move into the quality control and QA roles listed on the sister page. Some move into stone setting or finishing.
